Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

How do I add my first medication?

Tap the + button on the Today or Medications tab, then enter the medication. Name autocomplete helps you fill in details quickly, and you can set the dosage, schedule, and instructions.

You can also add a photo, set pill counts for refill reminders, and add special instructions.

How do I set up reminders?

Reminders are automatically created when you add a medication with a schedule. Make sure notifications are enabled in your device Settings > PillPal > Notifications. You can also enable time-sensitive notifications for critical medications.

Can I use PillPal without creating an account?

Yes! PillPal doesn't require any account. Your data is stored locally on your device. Optionally enable iCloud sync to keep data across your devices.

How does medication autocomplete work?

As you type a medication name, PillPal suggests matches so you can add medications quickly and accurately. You can always edit the name and dosage details by hand.

Drug Interactions

How does drug interaction checking work?

PillPal checks your medications against an on-device reference of common interactions whenever you add a new medication. You'll see a clear banner if a potential interaction is detected. This reference is educational only and is not a substitute for your pharmacist or doctor.

What should I do if I see an interaction warning?

Interaction warnings are informational. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before making any changes to your medications. The app shows the severity level and provides details about the interaction.

Is the drug interaction database complete?

The reference covers many common interactions but is not exhaustive. Always verify with your healthcare provider and pharmacist. PillPal is a reminder tool, not a replacement for medical advice.

Caregiver Sharing

How do I share my medication schedule with a caregiver?

Go to Settings > Caregiver Sharing > Add Caregiver. Enter their email or phone number and they'll receive an invitation. Once accepted, they can view your medication schedule and receive missed dose alerts.

What can caregivers see?

Caregivers can see:

  • Your medication list and schedules
  • Dose status (taken, skipped, missed)
  • Adherence statistics

They cannot modify your medications or settings.

How do I remove a caregiver?

Go to Settings > Caregiver Sharing, swipe left on the caregiver's name, and tap Remove. They will immediately lose access to your medication data.

Achievements & Gamification

What are achievements?

Achievements are badges you earn for consistent medication taking, including streak milestones, perfect weeks, and other accomplishments. View them in the History tab.

How do streaks work?

Your streak counts consecutive days with 100% adherence. Take all scheduled medications on time to build your streak. Missing or skipping a dose resets your streak to zero.

Can I disable achievement notifications?

Yes! Go to Settings > Notifications > Achievement Alerts to toggle them off. Your achievements are still earned and saved.

Side Effect Tracking

How do I log a side effect?

Tap the + button and select "Log Side Effect" or go to a medication's detail page and tap "Side Effects". Select symptoms, rate severity, and add notes. The app will help identify patterns over time.

Can I share side effect reports with my doctor?

Yes! Export a PDF report from Settings > Export Data > Side Effect Report. This includes all logged symptoms with dates, severity, and correlations with specific medications.

Emergency Medical Card

What is the Emergency Medical Card?

The Emergency Medical Card is a summary of your medications, allergies, and emergency contacts. First responders can access this information in an emergency.

How do I create an Emergency Card?

Go to Settings > Emergency Card > Generate. Fill in your emergency contacts and any allergies. You can print it, save as PDF, or add to Apple Wallet.

Refill Tracking

How do I track my medication supply?

When adding or editing a medication, enter the current pill count and pills per dose. PillPal calculates when you'll run out and sends refill reminders before you're empty.

Can I store my pharmacy details?

Yes. You can save your pharmacy's name and phone number alongside your prescription information so everything you need for a refill is in one place.

Can I store my prescription numbers?

Yes! In each medication's detail page, tap "Prescription Info" to store your Rx number, pharmacy, and prescribing doctor.

Notifications & Reminders

Why am I not receiving notifications?

Check the following:

  • Open Settings > PillPal > Notifications and ensure they're enabled
  • Check your Focus mode settings - PillPal can be configured as an allowed app
  • In PillPal Settings, verify "Enable Reminders" is on
  • Check that your medication has an active schedule
  • For critical medications, enable time-sensitive notifications

Can I snooze a reminder?

Yes! When you receive a notification, tap "Snooze" to be reminded again in 10 minutes (customizable in Settings). You can also snooze from the Apple Watch, Dynamic Island, or widgets.

What are Focus Filters?

Focus Filters let you customize which medications show reminders in different Focus modes (Work, Sleep, etc.). Go to Settings > Focus > Choose Focus > PillPal to configure.

How do Live Activities work?

Live Activities show your next dose on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island. They appear when a dose is due soon and dismiss when you take it. Enable in Settings > Live Activities.

Widgets & Control Center

How do I add PillPal widgets?

Long-press on your Home Screen > tap + > search for PillPal > choose a widget size and tap Add Widget. Works on Home Screen, Lock Screen, and StandBy mode.

Can I mark doses as taken from widgets?

Yes! On iOS 17+, our interactive widgets let you tap to mark doses as taken directly from your Home Screen or Lock Screen.

How do I add watch complications?

Long-press your watch face > Tap Edit > Select a complication slot > Choose PillPal. We offer circular, rectangular, and corner complications.

Multiple Profiles

Can I track medications for family members?

Yes! Create a profile for each family member. Go to Settings > Profiles > Add Profile. Each profile has its own medications, reminders, and history.

How do I switch between profiles?
